CentrAlert Chosen to Safeguard Emergency Alert and Notification System at Sadara

Monday, June 5th, 2017

Sadara Chemical Company, which operates the largest chemical complex built in a single phase, signed a CentrAlert technical support agreement to maintain its emergency alert and notification system that CentrAlert designed as part of an international team.

The agreement, which provides 24/7/365 technical support and priority issue resolution, will keep Sadara’s emergency alert and notification system primed and ready for any crisis. Previously, CentrAlert worked with a project team to design and implement the system. The project team also included WiPro, Honeywell and Jamal Jaroudi Group.

Coordinating for Diverse Environmental Conditions

Designing an emergency alert and notification infrastructure for Sadara involved coordinating emergency communication for multiple facilities with diverse environmental conditions. “The size and the scope of the project presented unique challenges for CentrAlert. But we excel at creating the right solutions to fit our clients’ needs,” said Jeff Whattam, president of CentrAlert.

CentrAlert’s Crisis-Driven Alert & Control (C-DAC) solution linked third-party systems into one easy-to-operate user interface. This included not only dedicated emergency warning devices for the outdoors (such as Whelen sirens) but also an indoor Honeywell Variodyn PA system used for non-emergency communications and announcements. CentrAlert unified the two systems under a single operational and feedback control system. They did this by writing a custom application programming interface to control the indoor notification system and utilizing its standard siren control software to direct the outdoor system.

Virtual Activation Capabilities

The Sadara site’s massive size and varied environmental conditions required special provision for system activation. CentrAlert staff integrated the system so it can be activated from virtually anywhere on site using Honeywell’s pushbutton call stations or C-DAC’s Guardian interface. This functionality allows Sadara personnel to initiate local alerts and regionalize messages. However, the main emergency center has the ability to override regional commands to send out a site-wide alert should the situation escalate.

The presence of chemicals and manufacturing equipment increased the importance of the continually crucial element of reliability for the emergency alert and notification system. Sadara’s emergency system includes complex backend redundancy to ensure maximum uptime as well as automatic failover to ensure system readiness. CentrAlert engineers also incorporated within C-DAC the ability to check diagnostics across disparate vendor systems and report critical issues to the network operations center. After designing C-DAC to exceed Sadara’s specific needs, CentrAlert engineers also installed and commissioned the hardware and software on site.

About Sadara

Sadara exists to create value through chemistry and increase economic diversification in Saudi Arabia. Their products form the building blocks for medical applications, additives for oil and gas, water treatment, detergents, cosmetics and more. Now that C-DAC protects Sadara, stakeholders can rest assured the plant, its workers and its resources will be protected.
